A gorgeous device, but I had hardware trouble with it and ‘upgraded’ quickly to the second phone on your list, which has to be one of my favourite phones. It is running today on CyanogenMod CM12, and is still no slouch. But then I am afraid you are off into unknown territory for me. So, I hop over the Samsung Galaxy Nexus warhorse to Nexus 5, which has to be on such a list, and then to the LG G3, which I believe you have been heard to describe as a near perfect device 😉

Just my experience..

– Sony Xperia Z (i know i know bad screen and camera but waterproof, rugged built & innovative… still getting updated to lollipop after all this time!)
– HTC Desire Z…..just for the keyboard and the full landscape interface which is now kind of a buzz when u see it on 6 plus or android launchers…it was default in htc sense 2.1 version..still running flawlessly to this day except for the terrible battery life ;p

‘Could have bought’. Just because an importer starts selling something doesn’t make it widely available or significant. The Milestone didn’t get into my hands, for example, until March 2010, a full month or so after I reviewed the Nexus One (imported from the USA – cough!)

So maybe my perception, and maybe I’m bending the timeline rules slightly, but the QWERTY-equipped Milestone was always going to be a niche device, while the Nexus One/Desire massively influenced what came afterwards.

By the time the ‘Milestone’ appeared here (UK) it was a bit long in the tooth.

Beg pardon?

eXpansys began selling the Milestone a mere 3 months after the Droid’s US release as a VZW exclusive…that’s 2 months before Google sold the first Nexus One (for US carriers) and nearly 6 months before the first UK-specific (Vodaphone) Nexus One variant.

6 Nov., 2009: ‘Droid’ sales (USA; VZW only)
10 Dec., 2009: ‘Milestone’ sales (UK; GSM radios)

5 Jan., 2010: ‘Nexus One’ sales (USA carriers)
30 Apr., 2010: ‘Nexus One’ sales (UK; Voda)

In other words, UK buyers could have bought a Milestone from eXpansys before the Nexus One was available anywhere, even in the USA. And Milestone was more widely available in the UK long before anyone there could buy & import the US-variant Nexus One.

And yet this timeframe qualifies the Milestone’s UK arrival as ‘long in the tooth’? How so? With no contrary facts to sink my teeth into, you’ll forgive me if I don’t ‘bite’ on this thesis. 😉

I guess I should have clarified the article’s intro to say that all of this was from a world/Europe perspective, not intra-USA. 😎

What is this ‘Europe’ of which your speak? 😉

In your case, it was Motorola’s model A853, AKA: ‘Milestone’, launched in the UK 10 Dec., 2009…that’s well ahead of your venerable Nexus One. The Milestone’s exclusive UK retailer (eXpansys) reported a total sell-out within 3 hours, calling the Milestone their ‘fastest-selling gadget’ of all time, even ahead of the original iPhone.:

And yes, the Droid/Milestone deserves a spot on this list if for no reason beyond two of it’s many standout features: first Android phone with the full ‘Google Experience’ skin and application stack, first device running Android v2.0 (‘Eclair’), including the game-changing Google Maps Navigation with turn-by-turn voice guidance.
